Needs Analysis

The first phase of an AV project, identifying how clients will use the space, who the users are, and the required functions, budget and constraints.

Definition

AVIXA describes needs analysis as gathering information about client activities, applications, users, room environment, infrastructure, budget and schedule, then documenting them in a program report. It precedes system design and helps prevent costly changes later. Interviews, site surveys and reviewing existing systems are common methods.

Example

Interviews reveal that a training room needs lecture capture and two-way video, so cameras are added to the scope.

Exam tip

Needs analysis focuses on what users must do, not on specific products.
