Near Field Communication (NFC)

Very short-range (about 4 cm) 13.56 MHz wireless communication used for payments, access badges, and pairing.

Definition

NFC supports reader/writer, peer-to-peer, and card emulation modes at up to 424 kbps. It is built on HF RFID standards such as ISO/IEC 14443. Its short range reduces eavesdropping risk, though relay and skimming attacks are possible.

Example

A phone taps a payment terminal using NFC card emulation.

Exam tip

NFC operates at 13.56 MHz with a range of a few centimeters.
