Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Technology that uses radio to identify and track tags, in LF, HF, and UHF bands, passive or active.

Definition

LF RFID (125-134 kHz) is used for animal tags and older badges, HF (13.56 MHz) for access cards and NFC, and UHF (860-960 MHz, EPC Gen2) for supply chain. Passive tags harvest power from the reader, while active tags have batteries for longer range. Badge cloning is a common physical security attack.

Exam tip

Passive tags have no battery; active tags do.
