NAT64

A translation mechanism that lets IPv6-only clients reach IPv4-only servers by mapping IPv4 addresses into an IPv6 prefix.

Definition

Stateful NAT64 (RFC 6146) translates between IPv6 and IPv4 packets, typically using the well-known prefix 64:ff9b::/96. It is paired with DNS64, which synthesizes AAAA records for IPv4-only names. Mobile carriers widely use NAT64 to run IPv6-only networks.

Example

An IPv6-only phone reaches 192.0.2.10 as 64:ff9b::c000:20a through NAT64.

Exam tip

NAT64 needs DNS64 to work for name-based connections.
