DNS64

A DNS function that synthesizes AAAA records from A records for IPv6-only clients, pointing them at a NAT64 prefix.

Definition

When an IPv6-only client queries a name that has only an IPv4 address, DNS64 combines the NAT64 prefix with the IPv4 address to create an IPv6 answer. Traffic to that synthesized address is then translated by NAT64.

Example

DNS64 returns 64:ff9b::5db8:d822 for a host whose A record is 93.184.216.34.

Exam tip

DNS64 creates fake AAAA records; NAT64 does the actual translation.
