Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)

The successor to IPv4, using 128-bit addresses written in hexadecimal, defined in RFC 8200.

Definition

IPv6 provides about 3.4 x 10^38 addresses, removing the need for NAT for address conservation. It has a simplified 40-byte fixed header, no broadcast, built-in autoconfiguration (SLAAC), Neighbor Discovery in place of ARP, and fragmentation only at the source. Interfaces normally have multiple addresses, including a link-local and one or more global unicast addresses.

Example

2001:db8:acad:10::25/64 is an IPv6 address in a /64 subnet.

Exam tip

IPv6 has no broadcast; it uses multicast (such as ff02::1) for those functions.
