Multitenancy

Architecture where multiple customers (tenants) share the same physical infrastructure or application instance with logical isolation.

Definition

Multitenancy lets providers achieve economies of scale by serving many tenants from shared hardware, hypervisors, storage and sometimes a shared application database. Strong isolation is critical; risks include data leakage between tenants, noisy neighbors and side-channel attacks.

Example

A SaaS application stores every customer's records in one database, separated by a tenant ID column and row-level security.

Exam tip

Multitenancy is a consequence of resource pooling; dedicated hosts or single-tenant instances are the mitigation when isolation is required.
