Dedicated Host

Physical server fully allocated to one customer, giving visibility of sockets and cores for license compliance.

Definition

A dedicated host is a physical server reserved for a single customer, on which they place their own instances. It provides control over instance placement and visibility of physical cores and sockets, supporting bring-your-own-license software and compliance requirements. AWS, Azure and Google Cloud (sole-tenant nodes) all offer it.

Example

A company uses EC2 Dedicated Hosts to run Windows Server licenses that are counted per physical core.

Exam tip

On AWS, Dedicated Hosts (not Dedicated Instances) give socket/core visibility needed for BYOL; that distinction is commonly tested.
