microATX (mATX)

A smaller motherboard form factor (9.6 x 9.6 inches) with up to four expansion slots.

Definition

microATX boards measure 244 x 244 mm and are backward-compatible with ATX cases and power supplies. They trade some expansion slots for a smaller footprint. They are common in business desktops and budget builds.

Example

A Dell OptiPlex tower or budget gaming PC often uses a microATX board.

Exam tip

microATX fits in ATX cases because mounting holes are a subset of ATX holes.
