Low-Power DDR (LPDDR)

A low-voltage variant of DDR memory used in phones, tablets, and thin laptops, usually soldered.

Definition

LPDDR (such as LPDDR5X) prioritizes power efficiency and is usually soldered to the board or packaged with the SoC, making it non-upgradeable. The emerging LPCAMM2 module standard allows LPDDR to be replaceable in some laptops. Capacity must be chosen at purchase on most devices.

Example

A thin ultrabook with 16 GB LPDDR5X soldered to the mainboard.

Exam tip

If a laptop has soldered LPDDR, a RAM upgrade is not possible; recommend a higher memory configuration at purchase.
