IP Phone Boot Process

The startup sequence in which a Cisco IP phone gets power, learns its voice VLAN, obtains an IP address and TFTP server, downloads its config and registers.

Definition

A Cisco phone obtains PoE (or local power), loads its stored firmware, learns the voice VLAN via CDP or LLDP-MED, requests an IP address via DHCP in that VLAN including option 150, downloads the CTL/ITL trust files and its SEP<MAC>.cnf.xml from TFTP, updates firmware if needed and registers to the first reachable CUCM node in its configuration.

Example

A phone stuck on 'Registering' has its config file but cannot reach CUCM on TCP 5060 or 2000.

Exam tip

Know the order: power, VLAN discovery, DHCP, TFTP, registration. Each failure point produces a distinct symptom.
