Inverter

A board that converts DC to high-voltage AC to power CCFL backlights in older LCDs.

Definition

Laptops and monitors with cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights used an inverter, a common failure point causing dim or flickering screens. LED-backlit displays do not need an inverter. Inverters carry high voltage and require caution.

Example

Replacing the inverter fixed a 2009 laptop with a flickering, dim screen.

Exam tip

If the question mentions CCFL and dim display, the inverter is a likely culprit.
