Incremental Backup

A backup that copies only data changed since the last backup of any type, minimizing backup time and storage.

Definition

Restoring requires the last full plus every incremental since then, in order, making restores slower. Incremental backups reset the archive bit or change tracking.

Example

Restoring Thursday's data needs Sunday's full plus Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday incrementals.

Exam tip

Incrementals are fastest to back up and slowest to restore; differentials are the opposite trade-off.
