Hyper-Threading (HT)

Intel's implementation of simultaneous multithreading that presents one physical core as two logical processors.

Definition

Hyper-Threading duplicates the architectural state of a core so it can schedule two threads at once, sharing execution resources and improving utilization. It typically yields a modest performance gain rather than doubling throughput. AMD's equivalent is called SMT, and it can be enabled or disabled in firmware setup.

Example

Task Manager showing 'Cores: 8, Logical processors: 16' indicates Hyper-Threading or SMT is enabled.

Exam tip

Logical processors are not extra physical cores; exam questions may test this distinction.
