Gold Plating

Adding extra features or functions beyond what was agreed, without customer request or approval.

Definition

Gold plating is usually done by the team to impress the customer, but it adds risk, cost, and unrequested scope. PMI considers it poor practice.

Example

A developer adds animated transitions the customer never asked for.

Exam tip

Gold plating originates from the team; scope creep often from stakeholders. Both are unwanted.
