Fusion Splicing

Permanently joining two optical fibers by aligning and melting them with an electric arc.

Definition

A fusion splicer aligns cleaved fibers and fuses them, producing very low loss (typically 0.1 dB or less) and minimal reflectance. Splices are protected with heat-shrink sleeves and stored in splice trays. Clean, precise cleaves are essential.

Example

Fusion-splice pigtails onto a 24-strand backbone in a rack-mount enclosure.

Exam tip

Fusion splices have lower loss than mechanical splices.
