Fiber Cleaver

A precision tool that scores and breaks an optical fiber to produce a flat, perpendicular end face.

Definition

A good cleave is critical for low-loss splicing and some connector terminations. The blade wears over time and must be rotated or replaced. Fiber shards must be collected and disposed of safely.

Example

Strip, clean, and cleave fiber before loading it into the fusion splicer.

Exam tip

Poor cleave angle causes high splice loss.
