Frequency

The number of times a wave completes a cycle per second, measured in hertz (Hz).

Definition

Frequency is the rate of oscillation of an RF signal. Higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths, suffer more free space path loss at the receiving antenna aperture, and are absorbed more by walls and other materials. Wi-Fi uses 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies.

Example

Channel 6 in the 2.4 GHz band is centered at 2.437 GHz.

Exam tip

Higher frequency means shorter range for the same power and antenna; 2.4 GHz penetrates walls better than 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
