Amplitude

The height or strength of an RF wave, corresponding to signal power.

Definition

Amplitude is the magnitude of the signal's oscillation and relates directly to transmit or received power. Amplitude decreases as the signal propagates due to free space path loss and absorption. Some modulation schemes, such as ASK and QAM, encode data by varying amplitude.

Example

An AP raising transmit power from 10 dBm to 17 dBm increases amplitude.

Exam tip

Amplitude is not the same as frequency; changing transmit power does not change the channel.
