find

A Linux command that searches directory trees for files matching criteria such as name, type, size, age, owner or permissions.

Definition

Tests include -name, -type, -size, -mtime, -user and -perm, and actions include -exec, -delete and -print. find searches the live filesystem, unlike locate, which uses a database.

Example

Exam tip

find -perm -4000 locates SUID files, a common security audit question.
