fdisk

An interactive Linux command-line utility for creating, deleting and listing disk partitions on MBR and GPT disks.

Definition

fdisk modifies the partition table in memory and writes changes only on the w command. Modern versions support GPT, though gdisk and parted are also used. After partitioning, the kernel may need partprobe to re-read the table.

Example

fdisk -l lists all disks and partitions; fdisk /dev/sdb starts an interactive session.

Exam tip

Remember fdisk changes are not saved until you enter w, and q quits without saving.
