Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

US law protecting the privacy of student education records at schools receiving federal funding.

Definition

FERPA gives parents rights to access and request amendment of education records and requires consent for most disclosures, with exceptions such as school officials with legitimate educational interest and directory information. Rights transfer to students at 18 or when attending postsecondary institutions. The Department of Education enforces it.

Example

A university may not release a student's grades to parents of an adult student without consent, absent an exception.

Exam tip

Rights transfer to the eligible student at 18 or upon college enrollment.
