Exposure Factor (EF)

Percentage of an asset's value expected to be lost if a specific threat event occurs.

Definition

Exposure factor is expressed as a percentage from 0 to 100 and is multiplied by asset value to calculate single loss expectancy. It reflects how much damage a single occurrence would cause. A fire destroying half a facility would have an EF of 50 percent.

Example

A flood would damage 25 percent of a $400,000 warehouse, so EF = 25%.

Exam tip

EF is a percentage of asset value, not a probability of occurrence; that is ARO.
