Single Loss Expectancy (SLE)

Expected monetary loss from one occurrence of a threat event: SLE = Asset Value x Exposure Factor.

Definition

Single loss expectancy quantifies the cost of a single incident affecting an asset. It is calculated by multiplying asset value by exposure factor. SLE is then multiplied by the annualized rate of occurrence to obtain annualized loss expectancy.

Example

Asset value $400,000 x EF 25% = SLE of $100,000.

Exam tip

Memorize SLE = AV x EF; exam questions often give extra numbers to distract.
