Quantitative Risk Analysis

Risk analysis that assigns numeric, usually monetary, values to assets, impacts, and probabilities.

Definition

Quantitative analysis uses values such as AV, EF, SLE, ARO, and ALE, or statistical methods like Monte Carlo simulation and FAIR, to express risk in financial terms. It supports cost-benefit decisions and comparison across risks. It requires reliable data and is more time-consuming than qualitative methods, and intangible losses are hard to quantify.

Example

An analyst calculates that ransomware has an ALE of $1.2 million and compares it to the cost of immutable backups.

Exam tip

Quantitative analysis is objective in form but still depends on estimates; it is best for cost justification.
