Dual-Channel Memory

A memory configuration that uses two channels simultaneously to increase bandwidth.

Definition

When matched modules are installed in the correct slots (usually color-coded or labeled A2/B2), the memory controller accesses both channels at once, doubling theoretical bandwidth. Triple- and quad-channel configurations exist on workstation and server platforms. Mismatched module sizes may run in flex mode.

Example

Two 8 GB sticks in slots A2 and B2 outperform one 16 GB stick for integrated graphics.

Exam tip

Install memory in pairs in the slots specified by the motherboard manual to enable dual-channel.
