Document Database

A NoSQL database that stores self-describing documents (JSON or BSON) whose structure can vary from document to document.

Definition

Document databases keep related data together in one document, which avoids joins, and they support queries and indexes on fields inside documents. Examples are MongoDB, Couchbase, Firestore, Amazon DocumentDB and the Azure Cosmos DB for NoSQL API.

Example

{ "_id": 1, "name": "Ana", "orders": [{"sku": "A1", "qty": 2}] }

Exam tip

A product catalog whose items have different attributes is a typical document-database scenario.
