dmesg

A Linux command that prints the kernel ring buffer containing hardware detection, driver and kernel messages.

Definition

dmesg is essential for diagnosing disk errors, USB detection, out-of-memory kills and driver problems. On systemd hosts, journalctl -k shows the same kernel messages with persistent history.

Example

dmesg -T | grep -i error shows timestamped kernel errors such as I/O failures.

Exam tip

For hardware or driver issues, check dmesg or journalctl -k before application logs.
