Routing & Switching · Intermediate

Discard Route

A route that silently drops matching packets, used to anchor aggregates and prevent loops (Junos discard next hop).

Definition

Discard routes are installed for summarized address space so that traffic to unused component subnets is dropped locally rather than following a less specific route, such as a default, back toward its source. Junos offers discard (silent drop) and reject (drop with ICMP unreachable) next hops.

Example

set routing-options static route 172.16.0.0/16 discard

Exam tip

Junos reject sends ICMP unreachable messages while discard does not; know the difference.
