Directory Number (DN)

A line number configured on a CUCM device or device profile, associated with a partition and line-level settings.

Definition

A DN is the extension that users dial, configured once and associated with one or more devices (creating a shared line when used on several). Each DN is placed in a partition and has a line CSS, call forward settings, voicemail profile, external phone number mask and AAR group. Patterns, hunt pilots and translation patterns are routed against DNs in the CUCM digit analysis engine.

Example

DN 2001 in partition PT-Internal is assigned to both a desk phone and a Webex App softphone, creating a shared line.

Exam tip

The same DN number can exist in different partitions as separate lines; partition plus number makes it unique.
