Direct-Attached Storage (DAS)

Storage connected directly to a single server, such as internal drives or an external SAS enclosure, without a network.

Definition

DAS is simple, fast and inexpensive but not easily shared between hosts. It is the foundation of many software-defined and hyperconverged storage designs.

Example

A server with eight internal NVMe drives uses DAS for a local database.

Exam tip

DAS is not shared over a network; NAS provides file access and SAN provides block access over networks.
