Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI)

An architecture combining compute, storage and virtualization on standard servers, with software-defined storage pooled across nodes.

Definition

HCI scales by adding nodes and is managed as a single system. Examples include Nutanix, VMware vSAN, Azure Local with Storage Spaces Direct and Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix.

Example

A four-node Nutanix cluster pools local SSDs into one distributed storage container for VMs.

Exam tip

HCI uses local drives across nodes rather than an external SAN; scaling adds compute and storage together.
