Digitizer

The touch-sensing layer of a screen or tablet that converts touch or pen input into coordinates.

Definition

Touchscreens use a digitizer layer, usually capacitive, over the display panel. Drawing tablets and stylus-enabled laptops use active digitizers for pressure sensitivity. A cracked digitizer can cause phantom touches or dead zones while the display still shows an image.

Example

A tablet registers random taps after a drop because the digitizer is damaged.

Exam tip

Ghost touches with an intact display often point to digitizer damage or a faulty screen protector.
