df

The Linux disk free command that reports total, used and available space for each mounted filesystem.

Definition

df -h prints human-readable sizes and df -i reports inode usage. It reports at the filesystem level, so it complements du, which totals space used by files in a directory tree.

Example

df -h /var shows how full the filesystem holding /var is.

Exam tip

If df shows a full disk but du totals much less, a deleted file may still be held open by a process (check lsof +L1).
