Dead Pixel

A display pixel that stays black, or a stuck pixel that stays one color, due to a panel defect.

Definition

Dead pixels never light up, while stuck pixels remain lit in one color and can sometimes be fixed with pixel-cycling tools. Manufacturer warranty policies define how many defective pixels qualify for replacement. They are panel defects, not GPU or driver issues.

Example

A single bright green dot on a new monitor that persists across inputs is a stuck pixel.

Exam tip

If the defect appears on every input and in screenshots it does not, the panel is at fault.
