Continuous Presence (CP)

A conference layout that shows multiple participants on screen at once, such as a grid or active speaker plus thumbnails.

Definition

Continuous presence can be composed by an MCU or by endpoints using streams from an SFU. Layout options include equal grid, prominent speaker and overlay. It contrasts with voice-activated switching, where only the current speaker is shown full-screen.

Example

A 3x3 grid layout shows nine remote participants in a Webex meeting.

Exam tip

Contrast with voice-activated switching, which shows only the loudest speaker.
