Secure Shell (SSH)

An encrypted protocol for remote command-line access, tunneling and file transfer, using TCP port 22.

Definition

SSH replaces Telnet and rlogin by encrypting sessions and supporting password or public-key authentication. SSHv2 is current; SSHv1 is insecure. Network devices require a hostname, domain name, RSA keys and local or AAA users before SSH can be enabled.

Example

ssh admin@10.1.1.1 opens a secure CLI session to a switch.

Exam tip

SSH = TCP 22; always choose SSH over Telnet for device management.
