Commit

A snapshot of tracked changes in a Git repository, with an author, message, timestamp, and pointer to its parent commit(s).

Definition

Each commit is identified by a SHA-1 (or SHA-256 in newer repos) hash of its content and metadata, forming an immutable history graph. Good commits are small, focused, and have descriptive messages.

Example

git commit -m "Add VLAN validation to config parser"

Exam tip

Changing a commit (amend, rebase) creates a new hash; avoid rewriting commits already pushed to shared branches.
