Co-Channel Interference (CCI)

Performance loss when nearby BSSs on the same channel must defer to each other's transmissions.

Definition

Also called co-channel contention, CCI occurs because devices hearing each other on the same channel share airtime via CSMA/CA. It is the most common capacity limiter in enterprise WLANs. Reducing transmit power, using more channels, and narrower widths reduce CCI.

Example

Two APs on channel 36 hearing each other at -75 dBm effectively halve available airtime.

Exam tip

CCI is a contention problem, not corruption; ACI causes corruption.
