Case Fan

A fan mounted in a computer chassis to move air through the system and remove heat.

Definition

Case fans establish airflow, usually with intake at the front or bottom and exhaust at the rear or top. They connect to motherboard 3-pin (voltage control) or 4-pin PWM headers. Dust filters reduce buildup and should be cleaned regularly.

Example

Front-to-back airflow with two front intake fans and one rear exhaust fan.

Exam tip

Blocked vents and clogged filters are common causes of overheating and loud fans.
