California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

California law, effective 2020 and amended by the CPRA, granting consumers privacy rights over personal information held by businesses.

Definition

CCPA applies to for-profit businesses doing business in California that exceed an inflation-adjusted revenue threshold (originally $25 million), buy, sell, or share personal information of 100,000 or more consumers or households, or derive 50 percent or more of revenue from selling or sharing it. Rights include to know, delete, correct, opt out of sale or sharing, limit use of sensitive personal information, and non-discrimination. A private right of action exists for certain data breaches.

Example

A national retailer must honor a California shopper's request to delete their data.

Exam tip

The CCPA covers employee and B2B data since January 2023.
