Assistive Listening System (ALS)

A system that delivers audio directly to people with hearing loss through FM, infrared or induction loop technology.

Definition

Accessibility regulations such as the ADA Standards for Accessible Design in the US require assistive listening in many assembly areas, including a percentage of receivers compatible with hearing aids. Induction (hearing) loops transmit directly to telecoil-equipped hearing aids; RF and IR systems use receivers and earpieces or neck loops. IR is preferred where privacy is important because it stays within the room.

Example

A courtroom installs an infrared ALS so audio does not leak to adjacent rooms.

Exam tip

Know the three technologies and that IR is contained by walls, unlike RF.
