Antenna

A device that converts electrical RF signals into radiated electromagnetic waves and back again.

Definition

Antennas both transmit and receive, and their shape determines the radiation pattern and gain. Antennas do not amplify signals; they focus energy in certain directions. Types include omnidirectional, semi-directional, highly directional, and sector antennas.

Example

A ceiling-mounted AP uses internal omnidirectional antennas.

Exam tip

Antenna gain is passive; it comes from focusing energy, not adding power.
