Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA)

A small device that connects analog phones or fax machines to an IP telephony system by providing FXS ports.

Definition

An ATA registers each analog port to the call control system as a SIP or SCCP endpoint and supplies dial tone and ringing to the attached device. Cisco ATA 191 and 192 register to CUCM or Webex Calling. ATAs are used for fax machines, door phones, elevators and legacy devices where an IP phone cannot be used.

Example

A Cisco ATA 192 registers two lobby courtesy phones as SIP endpoints on Webex Calling.

Exam tip

ATAs provide FXS functionality; they cannot connect to a CO line, which requires FXO.
