6 GHz Band

The 5.925-7.125 GHz band (up to 1,200 MHz) opened to Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 in the US in 2020.

Definition

The 6 GHz band, split into U-NII-5 through U-NII-8, provides 59 20-MHz, 29 40-MHz, 14 80-MHz, and 7 160-MHz channels in the US, plus 320-MHz channels for Wi-Fi 7. Only 802.11ax and later devices may use it, and WPA3 or OWE is mandatory. Many regions, such as the EU, opened only the lower 500 MHz.

Example

Exam tip

No legacy devices, WEP, or WPA2-only security are permitted in 6 GHz.
