Preferred Scanning Channel (PSC)

One of fifteen 6 GHz 20-MHz channels (every fourth channel) that clients scan to discover APs.

Definition

With 59 channels, scanning all of 6 GHz is slow, so PSCs (5, 21, 37, ... 229) give clients a reduced set to probe. APs using wider channels are encouraged to place their primary channel on a PSC. Out-of-band discovery via Reduced Neighbor Reports is also used.

Example

An AP on 80 MHz in 6 GHz uses channel 37 as its primary PSC.

Exam tip

Clients may only actively probe 6 GHz on PSCs.
