Wire Map

A test that verifies each conductor is connected to the correct pin at both ends of a twisted-pair cable.

Definition

Wire map failures include opens, shorts, reversed pairs, crossed pairs and split pairs. It is the most basic test performed by every cable tester.

Example

A wire map shows 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and so on for a correct straight-through cable.

Exam tip

Split pairs pass a simple continuity test but fail on crosstalk; only a tester that measures NEXT finds them.
