Split Pair

A wiring fault in which wires from two different pairs are used together as a pair, so pin-to-pin continuity is correct but twisting is broken.

Definition

Split pairs cause severe crosstalk and errors at higher speeds even though a continuity test passes. They often result from using an incorrect color order on both ends.

Example

A cable wired 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 with colors in the wrong pair grouping links at 10 Mbps but fails at 1 Gbps.

Exam tip

Split pairs fool basic continuity testers.
