Webhook

An HTTP callback in which a system sends an HTTP POST to a configured URL when an event occurs.

Definition

Webhooks push events instead of requiring clients to poll, enabling event-driven automation. Receivers should verify signatures (for example an HMAC header) and respond quickly, processing asynchronously.

Example

A GitHub push webhook calls a Jenkins endpoint to start a build; Meraki sends alert webhooks to a ChatOps bot.

Exam tip

Webhooks = push/event-driven; polling = client repeatedly asks. Validate the webhook's shared secret.
