VXLAN Tunnel Endpoint (VTEP)

The device or function that encapsulates and decapsulates Layer 2 frames into VXLAN UDP packets at the edge of an overlay.

Definition

VTEPs, usually leaf switches or hypervisors, map VLANs to VXLAN Network Identifiers (VNIs) and use a loopback IP as the tunnel source. VXLAN uses UDP 4789 and adds 50 bytes of overhead, so the underlay needs a larger MTU.

Example

Leaf1's NVE interface sources VXLAN tunnels from loopback1 10.255.0.11.

Exam tip

Raise underlay MTU (commonly 9216) to accommodate the 50-byte VXLAN header.
